No-Fines Concrete – Mixed On Site
“No-fines” concrete is exactly what it sounds like: a concrete mix that intentionally skips the “fines”—meaning the sand or small particles.
By leaving out the sand, this creates a material that is full of interconnected voids. Instead of a solid, dense block, you get a structure that looks a bit like a Rice Krispie treat made of stone.
- We use stones or gravel between 10mm and 20mm.
- Cement Just enough to coat every stone
- Water – just enough to get the right mix.
1. Key Characteristics of No-Fines Concrete
- Very Permeable: Water flows straight through it. It can’t be “waterlogged” because there’s nowhere for the water to sit except in the gaps.
- Lightweight: Because it’s 20% to 30% air, it’s much lighter than conventional concrete.
- Reduced Capillary Action: Since there are no tiny pores (like in sand-based mixes), water isn’t “sucked” upward. This makes it naturally resistant to dampness.
- Lower Strength: Without the sand to fill the gaps, it doesn’t have the same structural “muscle” as standard concrete
2. Common Uses
| Application | Why it’s used |
| Pavements & Driveways | Allows rainwater to soak into the ground, reducing runoff and flooding. |
| Retaining Walls | Relieves water pressure behind the wall by letting it drain through. |
| Load-bearing Walls | Historically used in “no-fines houses” for better insulation and damp proofing. |
| Sub-base for Sports Pitches | Ensures the field stays playable even after heavy rain. |
3. How It’s Made
The process is a bit like baking a cake. If you don’t get the “batter” right, the bubbles collapse, and you end up with a heavy, flat mess.
- Pre-foaming: A foam generator mixes the foaming agent with water and compressed air to create a stiff, shaving-cream-like foam.
- Mixing: This foam is injected into a cement slurry.
- Curing: The mix is poured. As it hardens, the bubbles stay trapped, creating a “honeycomb” internal structure.
4. Common Applications
Because it isn’t “strong” in the traditional sense, you won’t see it used for bridge decks. Instead, it shines in these areas:
- Trench Reinstatement: Filling holes in roads after utility work. It doesn’t settle, so the road won’t “sink” later. – A key benefit is it can be broken out should the needs arise relatively easily.
- Roof Insulation: Providing a lightweight, fireproof slope for drainage and heat retention.
- Void Filling: Filling old sewers, storage tanks, or basements that are no longer in use to prevent collapse.
- Precast Blocks: Lightweight “thermal blocks” used in house building for interior walls.
Foamed Concrete aka Cellular Lightweight Concrete (CLC)
Foamed concrete—also known as cellular lightweight concrete (CLC)—is a fascinating material that’s essentially “concrete with bubbles.” Unlike standard concrete, which relies on density and stone aggregates for strength, foamed concrete is a slurry of cement and water injected with stable air bubbles.
1. Composition:
Standard concrete contains gravel and sand (aggregates). Foamed concrete, however, typically removes the large stones entirely.
Cement: The binding agent (usually Portland cement).
Water: Creates the slurry.
Foaming Agent: A chemical surfactant (like a concentrated soap) that is whipped into a foam before being folded into the mix.
Optional Fine Sand/Fly Ash: Used to add some body without significantly increasing weight.
2. Key Characteristics
The defining feature of foamed concrete is its porosity. Because it contains between 20% and 80% air, its properties are very different from traditional concrete:
| Feature | Description |
| Lightweight | It can be as light as 300 kg/m³, whereas standard concrete is around 2,400 kg/m³. It literally floats on water. |
| Self-Leveling | It has a high “flowability,” meaning it fills gaps and levels itself without needing vibration or compacting. |
| Insulation | All those air pockets make it an incredible thermal and acoustic insulator. |

Trench Reinstatement: Filling holes in roads after utility work. It doesn’t settle, so the road won’t “sink” later. If at a later date you have to break out foamed concrete that is relatively easy because of its structure.
Roof Insulation: Providing a lightweight, fireproof slope for drainage and heat retention.

FAQs
½ Cubic Metre. You only pay for what you require.
Exact-Group operates two vehicles therefore we could deliver you at least 20 cubic metres. This solution is best suited to extensions footings, patios, house foundations, pathways and drives especially when you are not sure how much you need.
Yes, therefore we can adjust the mix to meet your needs. Please discuss with us what you are building when you book in the delivery.
Yes, within 20 metres of the vehicle. The vehicle has a spare wheelbarrow which you can use.
2 / 3 wheel barrows will soon shift your delivery
Yes – for larger pours this can be very cost effective. For smaller jobs wheelbarrows are the most economical option. The pumping comes from a separate vehicle so please do discuss when you enquire.
This depends upon the mix the air temperature when it is laid, ideally leave it a week at least to harden. Concrete typically takes 28-days to reach its maximum strength.
Yes, gloves should be worn and waterproof clothing – you do not want concrete touching your bare skin. If it does wash off immediately. Concrete is only a health risk when it is wet.
Yes, but unless you are in the trade chances are you would just call it mixed on site.
From Foundation Trenches To Concrete Foundations In Less Than 1-day.
Once filing the foundation trenches would have been a long job mixing batch after batch of concrete to create the foundations for the next stage.
With our onsite mixing service the job is massively speeded up and there is no waste. No sacks of cement going off.

Standard Concrete Strengths Available From Exact-Mix Onsite Concrete
Concrete can be mixed to the strength suitable for the job. The greater the ratio of cement to sand the stronger will be the concrete. However, cement is the more expensive ingredient hence people do not use the strongest possible mix for every job – it would be overkill.
Concrete consists of 4 main ingredients:-
- Portland cement
- Sand
- Aggregate (small stones)
- Water
The ratio of each of these ingredients can be adjusted to create the optimum mix for your job. Hence give us a call and we can provide the best solution for your mix. With your mixture being mixed onsite our highly skilled and experienced operator can confirm the suitability of the mx for your job.
Concrete comes in different strengths referred to by C and a number. The lower the number the weaker the concrete. The number refers to newtons after 28-days.
C15
Kerb mix ideally for putting kerbs on a block paving drive, small walls, a shed base or new conservatory. Also floors with no metal reinforcing.
